Last month's crossword got you thinking about demographics. Now find out why they're so important to growing your business.

Demographics and Marketing: You Can't Have One without the Other

Identifying a demographic that uses or could use your products is the start of a marketing campaign for any business - even originators and lenders. Knowing your demographic means you know some facts about your consumers: age group, gender, ethnicity, lifestyle, preferred language, region(s) they're located in, socioeconomic background, spending trends and even religion. Once you've got this information, you can focus on products specialized for your target demographic.

Here's an example of a few demographic facts that show which product may appeal to them: a study from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education showed that homebuyers who preferred adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs), were younger and less aware of the risks associated with interest-rate increases. For younger buyers, ARMs made sense economically. They could get into a house with the lowest payment possible and with little risk because the housing market allowed equity to build fast.

Now the market has changed and these ARMs are resetting. This makes it the perfect opportunity to follow up with your prior first-time homebuyers and refinance them into fixed-rate mortgages.

An article from the ClickZ Network stated that internet usage in the 25-34 age group was half that of TV.

This reveals that a marketing campaign, promoting refinancing to these homeowners, has a higher chance for success on TV versus the Internet.

There's your marketing campaign. You identified your demographic, appealed to their needs and found where to reach them. %%%%%%%%%
